Dental Cleanings Huntington Beach —
Professional Care That Protects Your Whole Investment
Professional dental cleanings remove what brushing and flossing cannot — calculus that hardens on teeth and implants and drives gum disease. At Huntington Beach Prosthodontics, every cleaning is an opportunity to monitor the health of your natural teeth and all dental restorations.

Professional dental cleanings are essential for everyone — but they take on additional importance for patients who have invested in restorative or implant dentistry. Dental implants, crowns, bridges, and veneers can all be undermined by gum disease and bone loss. The bacteria that cause periodontal disease do not distinguish between natural teeth and implants: peri-implantitis (infection around an implant) is one of the leading causes of implant failure, and it is almost always preventable with proper maintenance.
During your cleaning appointment, our hygienist removes calculus (tartar) using both ultrasonic instruments and hand scalers. Calculus cannot be removed by brushing — it is mineralized plaque that adheres to tooth and implant surfaces and harbors the bacteria responsible for gum disease. Once removed, teeth and implant surfaces are polished to remove surface staining and reduce the adhesion surface for future plaque accumulation.
Your cleaning appointment also includes periodontal probing — measuring the depth of the pockets between your gums and teeth (or gums and implants). Healthy pockets are 1–3mm. Pockets of 4mm or more indicate gum disease is developing or present. This measurement, taken and recorded at every visit, provides an objective trend line that identifies any deterioration early — before it becomes a significant problem.
For patients with a history of periodontal disease or with multiple implants, we may recommend 3–4 month recall intervals rather than the standard 6-month schedule. More frequent cleanings in these situations are supported by extensive clinical evidence and can mean the difference between maintaining a healthy implant indefinitely and losing it to infection.
