Precision-Guided Implant Placement

Modern dental implant placement is a far cry from the freehand procedures of earlier decades. At Huntington Beach Prosthodontics, every implant surgery begins with a 3D CBCT scan that maps bone volume, sinus anatomy, nerve pathways, and the relationship between adjacent roots. This data is used to plan the precise angle, depth, and diameter of each implant before a single incision is made.

The planned approach can be translated into a surgical guide — a custom-fabricated device that fits over your teeth and directs the implant drill to the exact planned position. Guided implant surgery reduces surgical variability, protects anatomical structures, and improves implant angulation for optimal crown emergence and aesthetics.

Step-by-Step: The Implant Placement Procedure

1

Anesthesia Administration

Local anesthetic is administered to fully numb the surgical area. For anxious patients, oral sedation or IV sedation can be arranged. You should feel pressure during the procedure but no sharp pain. If you feel discomfort at any point, let us know and additional anesthetic is administered immediately.

2

Tissue Preparation

A small incision is made in the gum tissue over the implant site. In some cases, a minimally invasive flapless technique is used where the gum is not incised — a small punch is used to access the bone directly. This technique reduces healing time significantly.

3

Osteotomy (Bone Drilling)

Using a series of progressively wider drills, the implant site is prepared in the bone. The drilling is done at precise speeds and with constant irrigation to prevent bone overheating. This is the phase where patients feel the most pressure.

4

Implant Insertion

The titanium implant post is threaded into the prepared site. The torque is carefully monitored — optimal insertion torque indicates immediate stability. A cover screw or healing abutment is placed to protect the implant during healing.

5

Closure & Post-Op

If an incision was made, it is sutured closed. You will receive a detailed post-operative care sheet and emergency contact information. Most appointments conclude within 1–2 hours from arrival to departure.

The Osseointegration Period

After placement, the implant needs 3–6 months to osseointegrate — to fuse with the surrounding jawbone through a biological process similar to bone healing after a fracture. This is the foundation for the implant's lifetime stability. During osseointegration, bone cells grow directly into the micro-textured surface of the titanium post, creating a bond that becomes stronger than the surrounding bone itself.

We confirm osseointegration with a 3D X-ray at approximately 12 weeks. Once confirmed, we proceed to the restorative phase — impressions, abutment selection, and crown fabrication. If you need a full arch replacement, visit our All-on-X page for information about same-day implant teeth.
