Bone Grafting for Dental Implants
in Huntington Beach, CA

Insufficient jawbone doesn't have to disqualify you from dental implants. Bone grafting rebuilds the foundation needed to support implants — turning "you can't have implants" into "you can, with preparation."

Why Bone Grafting Is Sometimes Needed for Implants

Dental implants require a minimum amount of bone to anchor securely. The titanium post needs to be surrounded by bone on all sides for osseointegration — the fusion process that gives implants their exceptional stability and longevity. When bone volume is insufficient, the implant has no stable foundation, leading to failure.

Bone loss occurs naturally when a tooth is lost and not replaced promptly. The jawbone exists to support tooth roots — when those roots are absent, the body begins resorbing the bone in that area. Within 12 months of extraction, patients can lose up to 25% of bone width and up to 4mm of height. After several years without tooth replacement, this loss becomes significant.

Other causes of bone loss include periodontal (gum) disease, trauma, previous failed implants, and long-term denture wear (which accelerates bone resorption through pressure on the ridge). Regardless of the cause, bone grafting at Huntington Beach Prosthodontics can rebuild the jawbone to levels that support successful dental implant placement.

Types of Bone Grafts for Dental Implants

Socket Preservation Graft

Placed immediately after tooth extraction to prevent socket collapse. The simplest and most common graft — prevents bone loss rather than rebuilding it. Highly recommended for any patient planning future implant placement.

Ridge Augmentation

Rebuilds bone width (horizontal augmentation) or height (vertical augmentation) when significant bone loss has already occurred. Requires 4–9 months of healing before implant placement.

Sinus Lift

Used specifically in the upper back jaw, where the sinus cavity often intrudes into the implant space. The sinus membrane is lifted and bone graft material placed beneath it, creating height for implant placement.

Block Graft

For large volume bone defects, a block of bone (often from the chin or wisdom tooth area) is secured to the implant site. Provides maximum bone volume but requires a second surgical site.

The Bone Graft Procedure: What to Expect

Bone grafting is performed under local anesthesia at our Huntington Beach office. For patients with dental anxiety, sedation options are available. The procedure duration varies by graft type — socket preservation takes 30–45 minutes; sinus lifts or ridge augmentations may take 60–90 minutes.

Following surgery, you'll receive detailed aftercare instructions. Soft foods for 2 weeks, avoiding the surgical site during brushing, and taking prescribed or over-the-counter anti-inflammatories as directed manage post-operative discomfort. Most patients return to work within 2–3 days.

Healing is monitored with periodic X-rays. We use 3D CBCT imaging to confirm that sufficient bone has grown before scheduling your implant placement surgery. Don't let someone else's assessment that you "can't have implants" be the final word — schedule a consultation with our prosthodontist for a definitive evaluation.
